Elon Musk, the head of the SpaceX company that created a revolution in the satellite internet sector, has now prepared to burst into the global telecom market. The company is planning to launch its official subscription-based mobile service by the end of 2027. As soon as this announcement is made, the leading telecom companies of America have started calling. These include T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T. Gwynn Shotwell, president of SpaceX, said the US cellular market is worth $600 billion and Starlink is hoping to get a bigger share of it. The company will completely eliminate dead zones without coverage through direct satellite connectivity. So that the mobile network will remain unaffected even during natural calamities. For mobile service, the company will set up a terrestrial network by installing a cellular base station on its Starlink broadband dish itself, thus saving huge expenditure on spectrum. In 2025, the company also bought a wireless spectrum license of 65 MHz from Echostar at a cost of $19.6 billion. In America's telecom sector, three companies, namely Verizon with 146 million users, T-Mobile with 130 million users, and AT&T with 110 million users, have a 95 percent share. These companies have built a huge network with billions of dollars of investment over a period of three decades. It may be mentioned here that till now there was a partnership between T-Mobile and Starlink for direct to cell connectivity outside the coverage area, but with this new plan of SpaceX, both the companies have now become direct competitors. In other countries of the world, including India, where Starlink satellite service is still waiting for approval, this new plan of SpaceX has also raised a lot of discussion in the worldwide telecom market.
