The common man has been dealt another blow during the festive season, with household budgets—particularly those managed by women—taking a significant hit. Just ahead of Diwali, Amul, one of the country’s leading dairy brands, has implemented a sharp hike in the prices of ghee and butter. Following this revision, the price of a 1 kg pack of Amul ghee has been increased by Rs 50, bringing it to Rs 680. Additionally, the price of a 500-gram pack of butter has been raised by Rs 15, setting the new price at Rs 325. As the consumption of ghee and butter typically surges during the festive season—driven by the preparation of sweets and pastries—this price increase has severely disrupted household budgets. According to company sources, the primary reason for the price hike and supply constraints is a sudden, substantial surge in demand. Recently, authorities in states like Gujarat and Rajasthan took strict action against the production of spurious (fake) ghee, seizing approximately 2 lakh kg of the adulterated product over the last six months. This crackdown has shifted consumer trust away from dubious local brands toward established, reliable names like Amul. Furthermore, it is worth noting that nearly 45 percent of the total annual consumption of ghee occurs during the festive season alone. This sudden spike in demand has placed immense pressure on the dairy supply chain, ultimately compelling the company to raise prices.
