Amidst ongoing tensions in West Asia, around 80 countries at the UN have demanded the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Led by Bahrain, these nations have called for the strait to be opened with immediate effect. They have appealed for the safe and unhindered passage of vessels and warned that disruptions to maritime trade routes could have serious consequences for global trade, food supplies, and energy security. Speaking at a media briefing held at the UN headquarters in New York during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani urged that the Strait of Hormuz be fully reopened as soon as possible. He also called for the effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, passed in March, which condemned Iran's attacks on Gulf nations and Jordan, as well as threats and obstructions to international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In a joint statement, the 80 countries asserted that no transit fees, conditions, or illegal burdens should be imposed on vessels. Countries called for ensuring freedom of navigation in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. They stated that this would prevent further disruptions to global trade.
