The US will cover mandatory social media screening for three additional visa categories from October 1st. The new screening includes I, TN and TD visa-applicants. Applicants under the I visa for foreign media representatives, the TN visa for US-Mexico-Canada Agreement professionals, and the TD visa for their dependents will be required to make their social media profiles available as part of verification. The US State Department has said that this decision has been taken in view of national security and that the social media profiles and posts of these visa-applicants will be reviewed online. The I visa is used by foreign media representatives who are traveling to the US on a temporary basis for their media-related work. TN visas are for eligible professionals who are citizens of Canada or Mexico and seek temporary admission to the United States for work scheduled under the USMCA. TD visa is for partner and unmarried minor children of TN visa holders. There is an I visa category for Indian applicants. From October 1, applicants for this visa will be instructed to set the privacy settings of all their social media profiles to Public or Open. The US State Department has not said that the new rule changes the basic eligibility criteria for this visa. Applicants must continue to comply with the conditions of the visa category for which they are applying.
